GENERAL INFORMATION
The College Hill Arts Festival (CHAF) is held annually rain or shine on the third Friday (and Saturday) of July. In 2010 it will take place on 16 - 17 July. The CHAF venue is a shady corner of the University of Northern Iowa campus at the intersection of 23rd and College streets in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Set-up for the two day festival begins early-evening Thursday July 15th. The Festival continually receives high marks from Patrons and Artists alike for its quality of exhibition, hospitality, sales levels, community support, and variety.

CHAF is recognized by the ArtFair Sourcebook and Sunshine Artist as the top show in Iowa and a top show in the Midwest.  CHAF juries its artists using the following categories: ceramics, drawing & pastels, fiber, glass, graphics & printmaking, jewelry, metalwork, mixed media 2D, mixed media 3D, oil/acrylic painting, photography &, sculpture, watercolor, wood, and ‘other’ option should the artists’ work not fit neatly into one of the other categories.

ARTISTS
Seventy five artists exhibit at the College Hill Arts Festival. The five 2009 Award of Excellence winners are jury exempt for the 2010 Festival. The remainder of exhibit slots will be determined through a competitive jury process. Artistic excellence of original work is the criteria for selection of exhibitors. The selection process is designed to select a well-balanced show across the different artistic disciplines and to meet the high quality expectations of the CHAF patrons. Artists not initially selected will be considered for a ‘wait list’ and offered festival spaces as they become available, up to and including, the day of the festival.

JURY DETAILS

The three-paneled jury is composed of professionals versed in a wide range of artistic media. A new jury is impaneled each year to ensure the show remains fresh and eliminate any favoritism or bias.  These same jurors will also be on-site at the Festival to select the Awards of Excellence winners on the first day of the show.

  • March 1, 2010 – Notification of jurying results

  • June 10, 2010 – Last day for full refund of booth fee upon artist cancellation

DIGITAL APPLICATION PROCESS:
The College Hill Arts Festival is moving to an all digital application and jury system for 2010 which will allow us to accept applications via the Internet.  We are requiring all images be submitted in the format as suggested by The National Association of Independent Artists [NAIA]: http://www.naia-artists.org/work/bulletin_to_shows_re_formatting_standards.pdf) using the following guidelines:

Guidelines:

  • Artists must submit a separate application for each category in which they wish to exhibit.
  • Four digital images of your artwork must accompany the completed Artist Application.
  • Include a fifth digital image of  your booth showing the typical set-up for a show.
  • Save the images in a baseline JPG format (not a progressive JPG).
  • Images are required to be saved as 1920 x 1920 pixels (maximum). No
other image size will be accepted. (Note this is the same as the
recommended NAIA Standard and is used by other shows and services such as
Zaplication and JAS. If you've sent it to them, you can send it to CHAF.)
  • Each image file size must be less than 1.8 MBs.
  • Each image file should be labeled with the submitting artist’s name, medium and the image number (1-4).  For Example;  SueSmithCeramic2.jpg
  • Images should be prepared in the sRGB (standardized Red Green Blue) color space. It is the default color space for most digital cameras, projection devices, and for viewing images on a monitor and in a browser.
  • If your image is not square, please mask your image with black to bring your image to 1920x1920 pixels.
  • Images will be projected with a high definition LCD projector calibrated to the sRBG color space.
  • Artists’ description of their work as provided will be read to the jurors.
  • If you have questions regarding digital image preparation, the NAIA offers Digital Resources on preparing your images and recommendations on professionals offering digital imaging services.

Reproductions at the College Hill Arts Festival

Reproductions of an artist’s one-of-kind original painting, pastel, drawing, collage or mixed media may be exhibited and sold subject to the following:

  • All reproductions regardless of the reproduction method must be signed by the artist. If selling reproductions the artist must display, as part of the artist statement, which reproduction methods are employed (i.e. lithograph, giclee, etc.)
  • All reproductions, whether framed or unframed, must be clearly and individually labeled "REPRODUCTION" or "LIMITED EDITION REPRODUCTION". This notice must appear on the FRONT of each item displayed.
  • Browse bins will not mix original art work with reproductions.
  • Framed reproductions may be displayed in browse bins and/or hung on the booth.  Unframed reproductions must be displayed in browse bins.

EXHIBIT SPACES:
Artists are provided with a 13’x13’ minimum ground space, all with vehicle access, on grass in the park-like  corner of the University campus. Space between booths is comfortable, allowing presentation from three sides. Traffic patterns for CHAF have been designed to insure every space receives all traffic, so no site has advantage over any other site. There is no electrical service available on site. Artists must provide their own display materials and canopies.  Artists are also responsible for set up, storage, and tear down of their materials within the confines of their allotted space.  Display units should be designed for outdoor use and capable of withstanding the elements.

SECURITY:
Although the Festival will provide some security, exhibitors are responsible for any loss, theft or damage to their work and/or personal property while setting up, participating in, and taking down their booth.
